Complete Jeep Wrangler JL Build – MetalCloak Suspension, Öhlins Shocks and Off-Road Accessories
At the Szekla4x4.pl workshop, we regularly complete projects that transform stock off-road vehicles into machines ready for real challenges. This time, a Jeep Wrangler JL arrived at our shop and underwent a comprehensive rebuild – from suspension and lighting to expedition and recovery equipment.
The goal of the project was to create a versatile Wrangler that performs equally well in everyday use, on long overlanding trips, and in demanding off-road terrain.
The result? The vehicle gained significantly improved off-road capability, driving stability, and functionality, while still maintaining comfort on paved roads.
Jeep Wrangler JL Suspension Lift – MetalCloak and Öhlins Shocks
One of the most important stages of the build was the suspension upgrade. In this project, we installed a 2.5-inch lift based on MetalCloak components, which are among the most highly regarded solutions in the Jeep world.
The system is based on:
- springs MetalCloak True Dual Rate – front and rear
- a complete set of adjustable control arms
- adjustable Durotrak track bars front and rear
- extended sway bar links
- bump stops
- King Shocks steering stabilizer
- track bar reinforcement
The True Dual Rate springs provide a two-stage spring rate characteristic, which makes the suspension comfortable on the road while remaining very stable off-road. Most importantly, the Dual Rate design prevents the spring from falling out during extreme articulation.
The setup is completed with Öhlins Adventure STX shocks, which are considered among the best shocks for Jeeps in the off-road world. Thanks to the technology used by Öhlins, the vehicle gains:
- excellent control over uneven terrain
- stability at higher speeds off-road
- very good suspension performance on big impacts
- the PDS (Progressive Damping System) takes care of landings and keeps the vehicle under control in difficult terrain
Additionally, we installed a King Shocks steering stabilizer, which improves steering precision after lifting the vehicle and fitting larger tires.
The whole setup was further reinforced with the installation of a Steer Smarts Yeti XD track bar bracket reinforcement, which increases the durability of the steering system in demanding off-road conditions.
WARN Zeon 12S Platinum Winch and Aluminum Bumper
A Jeep Wrangler built with off-road driving in mind cannot do without a solid recovery setup.
In this project, we installed the WARN Zeon 12S Platinum winch, which offers a pulling capacity of over 5443kg and an advanced control system. The Platinum model allows the winch to be operated both by remote control and via a mobile app.
The winch was mounted in an anniversary aluminum Wrangler JL bumper, which provides:
- space for the winch
- undercarriage protection
- the option to install parking sensors
The installation is additionally complemented by a WARN cutoff switch with an in-cab control button, which allows the winch power supply to be safely disconnected. Yes, the Zeon has its own cutoff, but we like it when the installation provides a high level of safety.
To increase the vehicle’s functionality in the field, we also installed:
- bullbar
- brackets for mounting additional LED lights
- a tilting license plate mount under the winch fairlead
Off-Road Lighting – Siberia Skylord Driving Light
Proper lighting is essential when driving off-road at night. In this Wrangler, we installed Siberia Skylord Driving Light 7″ lamps, which offer a very strong and wide beam of light - 5850 lm
The lights were mounted on the bullbar using dedicated mounting brackets.
Thanks to this solution, the vehicle gained:
- significantly better visibility off-road
- greater safety during night driving
- a distinctive, aggressive look
Fuel Off-Road Wheels and Yokohama Tires
The suspension lift made it possible to fit a larger wheel setup.
In this project, we used:
- Fuel D569 Vapor alloy wheels
- off-road Yokohama tires
The combination of an aggressive tread pattern and a lightweight, durable wheel improves both traction off-road and the durability of the entire setup when driving over rocks or through mud.
Everyday Functionality – Electric Side Steps and Snorkel
While modifying the Jeep, we also wanted to improve the comfort of everyday use.
That’s why the vehicle received AMP Research PowerStep electric side steps, which automatically deploy when the doors are opened. Thanks to this:
- it is easier to get into the lifted vehicle
- the vehicle retains ground clearance off-road
- everyday usability is improved
Additionally, we installed a snorkel for the Jeep Wrangler JL, which allows safe crossing of deep water and reduces dust intake when driving off-road.
BRAVO Snorkel Jeep Wrangler JL – Preparation for Water and Dust Driving
When building a vehicle intended for off-road driving, proper preparation of the engine intake system cannot be overlooked. That is why in this project we installed a snorkel dedicated to the Jeep Wrangler JL/JLU.
A snorkel is a raised air intake that moves the air intake point from the engine bay to the height of the vehicle’s A-pillar. Thanks to this, the engine can draw air from a higher and cleaner location, which is extremely important when driving in difficult off-road conditions.
The greatest advantage of this solution is the increased safety during water crossings. In off-road conditions, a vehicle may need to cross river fords or deep puddles. A snorkel reduces the risk of water being sucked into the engine, which could lead to serious engine damage.
Another important advantage is the protection of the engine from dust and dirt, especially when driving in a convoy on gravel roads or desert routes. The higher-mounted air intake draws in less dusty air, which has a positive effect on engine performance and air filter durability.
It is worth emphasizing that the snorkel used in this Wrangler was designed so that its installation does not require cutting body panels. Thanks to this, the installation is safe for the bodywork, and the vehicle retains an aesthetic, factory-like appearance.
Combined with the lifted suspension, large off-road tires, and recovery equipment, the snorkel is an important part of preparing the Wrangler for expeditions, water crossings, and driving in very demanding terrain.
Tow Hitch and Expedition Equipment
The vehicle was also prepared for towing a trailer and transporting equipment.
We installed a complete set:
- tow hitch mount
- dedicated 13-pin wiring harness
- adjustable AH-5 hitch ball
Additionally, the Wrangler received:
- hydraulic jack T-Max Jack
- reinforced spare wheel carrier
Active Exhaust System
Finally, we enhanced the project with an active Szlagi Garage muffler, which allows the exhaust system volume to be adjusted.
Thanks to this, the driver can choose:
- a quiet mode for city driving
- a more aggressive sound when driving off-road
Ready for Anything – Wrangler Built by Szekla4x4
The result of this build is a comprehensively prepared Jeep Wrangler JL, which combines:
- excellent suspension for off-road driving
- professional recovery equipment
- modern lighting
- expedition-ready functionality
This project shows how much can be achieved thanks to properly selected components and professional installation.
